In January 2019, the House Speaker formed the Study Group on Economic Security.

The Study Group is to assess the current impact of poverty on Marylanders, including factors that cause and contribute to poverty, as well as the future impact of poverty. State laws, policies, and programs to reduce poverty will be examined by the Study Group, which also will consider all factors in alleviating poverty through employment and economic opportunity; accessible and affordable housing; asset building and financial stability; access to healthcare; food security; and access to transportation. Improving the economic stability of families not eligible for assistance programs and with no safety net also will be a focus of the Study Group.
